The latest generation of LTO data tape technology, LTO-5, enables the creation of a second partition on the tape which can be used for indexing the tape’s content. Linear Tape File System (LTFS), announced with LTO-5, is an enabling technology exploiting the dual partition feature. LTFS creates a direct access construct for LTO-5 tape systems. This SMPTE PDA Now session will describe the LTO tape technology, summarize how LTFS works and outline how LTO-5 is being utilized in the industry.
